As a Brooklyn resident, parent, and digital literacy educator, participating in Community Board 18’s back-to-school community event was especially meaningful to me. The event offered an opportunity to connect with families in my own neighborhood while sharing resources that can help children navigate technology more safely and thoughtfully.

BAM Digital Media attended the event to provide practical guidance around the digital issues affecting families every day. Parents are managing questions about screen time, social media, artificial intelligence, and online safety, often without having a clear place to turn for support.

Community events like this create space for those important conversations.

Sharing Practical Digital Literacy Resources

At the BAM Digital Media table, families learned more about how technology can influence children’s attention, behavior, and online experiences. I shared information designed to help parents begin productive conversations at home and make informed decisions about their family’s technology use.

Many children understand how to open an app or navigate a device. Fewer understand why certain videos appear in their feeds, how platforms collect information, or how online content can influence emotions and decisions.

Digital literacy education helps young people look beyond the screen and think more carefully about what is happening behind it.

The resources shared at the event addressed topics such as healthier screen habits, personalized feeds, digital footprints, and online safety. Families could also learn about BAM Digital Media’s workshops for students, caregivers, and educators.

The Digital Questions Families Are Asking

Every conversation at the table pointed to the same thing: families want a clear place to start.

Conversations at community events continue to show how much support families want in this area. Caregivers are working to establish device boundaries while children use technology for school, entertainment, and communication.

Artificial intelligence has introduced another layer of questions. Parents want to understand how students are using AI, what responsible use looks like, and how these tools may affect learning. Social media platforms continue to raise concerns about privacy, emotional well-being, and exposure to misleading content — including how the algorithms behind those feeds actually work.

These challenges rarely have one simple solution. Families benefit from clear explanations and realistic strategies that fit into daily life.

My goal is to make these topics easier to understand without relying on fear or technical language. Parents should leave a workshop feeling more confident about discussing technology with their children and creating expectations that work for their households.

Why Community-Based Digital Literacy Matters

Schools play an essential role in preparing students for the digital world. Families also need opportunities to build their knowledge and participate in the conversation.

When parents understand how algorithms work, they can help children question why certain content keeps appearing. Learning about digital footprints can lead to better conversations about posting and sharing. Greater awareness of online privacy can help families recognize risks before a problem occurs.

Providing this education through neighborhood events makes the information approachable and accessible. Families can ask questions, discover local resources, and connect with organizations already working in their communities.

Being able to offer that support within Community Board 18 was a proud moment for me as a Brooklyn business owner.
