Building A Digital Home — My Class with Accelerate Change

Building A Digital Home — My Class with Accelerate Change

Last week, I had the pleasure of stepping into the world of creators and community-builders as I led a hands-on workshop through the nonprofit Accelerate Change (AC) — a media lab and incubator that’s dedicated to driving civic engagement, especially within BIPOC and low-income communities.

To kick things off: AC describes itself as “a full-fledged media lab that has helped develop some of the largest nonprofit media ventures in the country.” Their mission is to increase civic engagement in historically under-represented communities by building digital media networks, investing in cultural media properties, and experimenting with new models of organizing online.

I was thrilled to support their mission by teaching a group of creators how to turn their thousands of followers into something more—into a “digital home” that they fully control, build, and monetize.

Why this matters: from followers to community

Lots of creators have strong social-followings, but the big leap is creating a space where fans aren’t just followers—they’re engaged, moving together, and invested. In the session, I focused on that transition: moving from broadcast to belonging, from feeds to frameworks.

Given AC’s focus on digital media networks, influencers, and culture properties, creating spaces where voices from BIPOC and low-income communities can rally around shared interests is right in line with their DNA.

What we covered

Here’s what we walked through in the workshop — and what I can bring to a client looking to build their creator business:

1. Choosing the right domain name
We started at the foundation: your website address. I guided creators on how to pick a domain that captures their brand, resonates with their audience, and doesn’t limit their future growth. We talked about keyword relevance, brand recall, and why owning your domain = owning your digital home.

2. Installing WordPress
We dove into installing and configuring WordPress—a flexible, creator-friendly platform. We tackled hosting, SSL, WordPress installation, adjusting basic settings, and why it’s still one of the most cost-effective ways to run your own online home.

3. Using the Block Editor
Once WordPress was live, we switched to the Block Editor (Gutenberg) so creators could design pages and posts visually. I showed them how to create reusable blocks, layouts, segmenting content, and establishing brand consistency—all without needing to code.

4. Monetizing traffic with ad networks
One of the big questions: “How do I make this pay off?” We explored ad network basics, how to integrate ads responsibly, the trade-offs (experience vs revenue), and how to combine ads with memberships, affiliate links, and product offers. I emphasized that savvy creators diversify beyond ad CPMs.

5. Making the community sticky
Beyond the tech, we talked strategy: how to funnel your social followers into your website, build email lists, create forums or private groups, deliver value that keeps them coming back, and leverage that anchor for both engagement and income.

When you work with me at BAM Digital Media, you’re getting someone who doesn’t just “teach a tool”—I walk side-by-side with creators who want to build sustainable digital homes, not just social profiles. Through this class with AC, I brought expertise in content, community-building, and monetization together for an audience motivated by impact and scale.

Whether you’re a creator with 10K or 100K followers, or a brand seeking to funnel your audience into an owned-asset platform, I help you take the next step: from social follower counts to meaningful community membership.

Looking ahead

For the creators in the class, the next step is:

  • Choose and register your domain this week
  • Install WordPress, pick a theme aligned with your brand
  • Build your homepage, an “about” page, a “join the community” landing page
  • Create your first value-driven piece of content
  • And set up at least one monetization path (ad network, affiliate link, or paid membership)

If you’re ready to move beyond chasing algorithm changes and begin building that stable, owned, high-value asset of your own digital home — I’d love to talk. Together we can map your strategy, get the tech live, and create the community that becomes your business engine.

Thanks to Accelerate Change for bringing me in and to the creators for their energy, ideas and hustle. If you’d like to see how this kind of workshop can transform your creator platform, let’s connect.
